Roll & Reign
About Roll & Reign
Roll & Reign pivots away from the card-slinging norms of the roguelike genre, replacing decks with a population of sentient dice that function as your labor force. The game does not yet have a wide release, but the official release date for Roll & Reign on PC is July 13, 2026. This project from developer Ruben Arranz turns the standard city-builder into a high-stakes resource management puzzle where your villagers are literally represented by dice ranging from four to eight sides. Success depends on surviving a compounding tribute system that demands regular payments to an emperor, forcing a constant balance between expanding your settlement and hoarding enough wealth to satisfy the crown.
Building the City of Chance on July 13, 2026
The gameplay loop centers on a draft-and-assign mechanic that rewards spatial awareness and probability management. During each turn, you select buildings from a randomized pool and place them within your settlement, then assign your "villager" dice to activate them. These buildings are not static earners; their efficiency changes based on their proximity to other structures and the specific class of the die assigned to them, such as farmers or merchants. Because certain buildings trigger different effects based on specific roll values, a high roll is not a universal win. You might need a low number to trigger a specific utility effect, turning a traditionally bad roll into a tactical advantage. This creates a friction between the RNG of the roll and the deterministic nature of your city's layout.
As you progress, the complexity shifts from simple resource gathering to die manipulation and class specialization. You are essentially building a custom engine out of polygons, upgrading individual dice to better fit the evolving needs of your infrastructure. The primary risk lies in whether the positional synergies and die-class interactions offer enough depth to prevent the tribute requirement from feeling like a repetitive math wall. For those who enjoy the tight resource loops of titles like Against the Storm but want the tactile, probability-focused progression of a dice-driven roguelike, this is a clear candidate for the library. Watch for reviews closer to launch to see if the building variety can sustain long-term interest, but go ahead and wishlist this now if you prefer your strategy games with a heavy dose of probability management.
